By: Rhue Rosa, LMSW, Social Worker, One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale STAR Health Center
In honor of National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, Rhue shares a powerful poem, “Surmounting the Mountains of Depression,” highlighting the importance of acknowledging emotional struggles, breaking the silence surrounding mental health and seeking support.
Through thoughtful verses, Rhue reminds us that mental health deserves just as much attention as physical health.
Surmounting the Mental Health Mountain
Some get the impression
That symptom suppression
Will halt regression
And stifle depression
But the key to progress
Is not trying to impress
by refusing to confess
That we’re drowning in mess
Suffocating in trauma
And quicksands of drama
While in work clothes or pajamas
We face endless dilemmas
We faithfully count calories
Working out in a frenzy
Guzzling vitamins and smoothies
While mental muscles atrophy
Let’s bring interventions to the forefront!
End the risk-taking and self-injurious stunts
We are guaranteed to ascend and surmount
When we acknowledge that mental health counts!
