On Saturday, September 27th, the annual Ballers 4 Sickle Cell Tournament took place for the second year in honor of Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The event was hosted through the collaborative efforts of the two Sickle Cell Clinics of One Brooklyn Health (at Bishop Walker and Brookdale campus), the event engaged youth while bringing awareness to Sickle Cell disease and highlighting OBH’s commitment to education, prevention, and community health.
Emceed by NY Post sports anchor and reporter, Dexter Henry, the tournament featured three youth basketball matchups with Overcoming Sports Academy, District 19, and PS 308, along with intermission activities including a cheerleading performance, a special drumline performance by Big Apple Leadership Academy, and the “Shoot for Swag” Free Throw Competition. Adding an educational component, the event also included a sports clinic led by Sarah Ogoke, a Nigerian American basketball player, five-time Women’s African Basketball Championship winner, and Orthopedics Resident at One Brooklyn Health Kingsbrook Campus, who guided players on proper warm-up techniques before and after games.
