Interfaith Medical Center, a pillar of medical excellence since its formation on December 31, 1982, is proud to offer one of the oldest and most diverse residency programs in the country. Formed through the merger of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Crown Heights and St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Bedford-Stuyvesant, our institution has a rich history of growth and service. Both founding hospitals, prominent employers in Central Brooklyn during the first half of the 20th century, have left a legacy of healthcare excellence. Our residency program is distinguished by its commitment to diversity, serving a varied and vibrant patient population. Our alumni have successfully matched into prestigious fellowship programs or embarked on rewarding careers as hospitalists and primary care physicians, both locally and nationally. In 2016, Interfaith Medical Center became part of One Brooklyn Health, enhancing its capacity to deliver top-tier medical care. OBH Interfaith Medical Center continues to uphold its mission as a safety-net hospital, providing essential healthcare services to the underserved community of Central Brooklyn. We invite you to explore our program and join a legacy of compassionate, comprehensive care.
Greetings!
Thank you for taking the time to learn about the Interfaith Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program. As the program director, I am pleased to welcome you to our hospital and share with you what our program offers.
Our three-year, categorical, community-based residency program is part of the One Brooklyn Health System. We have successfully trained graduates who excel in their careers both locally and nationwide. Our goal is to offer high-quality, patient-focused, and evidence-based training that prepares our residents for success in private practice, academia, or specialty fellowships, ensuring they are skilled and well-equipped for their future roles.
The 6+2 curriculum we offer provides a well-rounded educational experience that balances inpatient and outpatient care. Residents gain hands-on learning through bedside rounds, didactic sessions, interactive educational activities, and personalized mentoring. They also engage in various scholarly activities, often leading to research publications and poster presentations at regional and national conferences. Moreover, residents have the chance to develop their teaching abilities by mentoring medical students and taking part in ‘residents as teachers’ sessions. They are also involved in quality and safety initiatives and participate in institutional committees, helping to shape them into future leaders in healthcare.
At Interfaith Medical Center, we are proud to nurture a positive and supportive learning environment. We are dedicated to ensuring that every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their highest potential. Our inclusive and diverse culture fosters both professional and personal growth, and we prioritize resident wellness by offering regular wellness events and activities. We aim to be your second home during these three years of training, providing the encouragement and support you need to reach your full potential.
In this program, we encourage freedom of thought and the expression of ideas in a positive direction. Your unique perspectives are invaluable, and we believe that collaboration and open dialogue will foster innovation and growth. I want to emphasize that our expectation is for each of you to bring your personal best. There is no competition among residents; instead, the only competition is with yourselves. We aim to be your second home during these three years of training, providing the encouragement and support you need to reach your full potential.
I look forward to welcoming you to our program and supporting you on this exciting and fulfilling journey in your medical career.

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to education, with the goal of developing clinically competent Board-Certified Internists. This foundation enables our graduates to pursue diverse career paths, including primary care practice, subspecialty training, hospitalist careers, or academics.
Our innovative 6+2 block scheduling system reduces fatigue and burnout while preparing residents for their future careers. Residents spend 4 weeks on the floors followed by 2+2 weeks in Outpatient/Elective rotations.
The continuity clinic is a cornerstone of our residency program. Each resident is assigned a panel of patients whom they will follow throughout their residency. This long-term relationship allows residents to provide comprehensive and continuous care, gaining a deep understanding of their patients' medical histories and building strong doctor-patient relationships. Residents monitor their patients' progress, manage chronic conditions, and coordinate care with specialists as needed. This continuity of care is essential in developing the skills necessary for primary care practice.
During outpatient rotations, residents experience a variety of clinical settings and specialties, including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and more. These rotations are designed to provide exposure to a wide range of medical conditions and outpatient procedures. Residents are given ample opportunities to engage in direct patient care, enhance their diagnostic and therapeutic skills, and learn the nuances of outpatient medicine.
Our program ensures that residents are well-prepared for the diverse challenges of outpatient care. They learn to manage common and complex medical issues, perform routine screenings and preventive care, and develop treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. Additionally, they gain experience in patient education, motivational interviewing, and the use of electronic health records.
In their first year, during clinical rotations, residents are given dedicated time for Quality Improvement (QI) activities. They subsequently meet with advisors and either join an ongoing QI project or develop a new project based on hospital quality and safety data or their own experiences.
We provide dedicated lecture time that residents must attend. These sessions are interactive, featuring case presentations and discussions on various topics, with attending physicians and fellows participating. This educational time is crucial for reinforcing medical knowledge and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Our program caps the number of admissions per team and per resident, ensuring a manageable workload. Each floor team consists of one senior resident and 1-2 interns, along with medical students, promoting an efficient approach to patient management and ample opportunities for case discussion.
Individual schedules vary but are adjusted to maintain a balance of experience and fair workload distribution over the three years of residency. The call schedule for floor rotations follows a short-call/long-call system, with long calls from 7 am to 7 pm and short calls from 7 am to 4 pm. We have dedicated admitting team and admission during call hours follow drip system.
Resident wellness is a continuous process in our program, featuring a variety of activities such as potlucks, wellness walks, mentor-mentee pairings, buddy groups, sports, and other regularly planned events by the resident wellness group. In addition to these activities, we provide dedicated male and female on-call rooms with attached bathrooms, and a resident lounge equipped with TV and cable services. We also host regular wellness lectures and activities, including sessions from guest speakers where residents learn about their rights and strategies for managing work-life balance.
