Internal Medicine Residency

One Brooklyn Health Interfaith Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program

Interfaith Medical Center, a pillar of medical excellence since its formation on December 31, 1982, is proud to offer one of the oldest and most diverse residency programs in the country. Formed through the merger of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Crown Heights and St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Bedford-Stuyvesant, our institution has a rich history of growth and service. Both founding hospitals, prominent employers in Central Brooklyn during the first half of the 20th century, have left a legacy of healthcare excellence. Our residency program is distinguished by its commitment to diversity, serving a varied and vibrant patient population. Our alumni have successfully matched into prestigious fellowship programs or embarked on rewarding careers as hospitalists and primary care physicians, both locally and nationally. In 2016, Interfaith Medical Center became part of One Brooklyn Health, enhancing its capacity to deliver top-tier medical care. OBH Interfaith Medical Center continues to uphold its mission as a safety-net hospital, providing essential healthcare services to the underserved community of Central Brooklyn. We invite you to explore our program and join a legacy of compassionate, comprehensive care.

Program Director

Dr. Kalpana Panigrahi

I want to take a moment to extend a warm welcome as you embark on this transformative journey with us. Our goal is to create an environment where you feel comfortable, supported, and empowered to thrive both professionally and personally throughout your three years of immersive training.

In this program, we encourage freedom of thought and the expression of ideas in a positive direction. Your unique perspectives are invaluable, and we believe that collaboration and open dialogue will foster innovation and growth.

As you navigate through your residency, I want to emphasize that our expectation is for each of you to bring your personal best. There is no competition among residents; instead, the only competition is with yourselves. Focus on your development and progress and support one another in achieving our common goal: improving patient care outcomes.

Together, let’s create a culture of excellence, compassion, and teamwork. I am excited to see the incredible contributions you will make during your time here.

Mission Statement

Our Internal Medicine Residency program at Interfaith Medical Center is committed to developing versatile, skilled, and compassionate physicians who will excel in their chosen paths, contribute to their communities, and lead the way in advancing healthcare while continuing to find joy in practicing medicine.

To achieve a comprehensive training experience in the Internal Medicine Residency program at Interfaith Medical Center, we emphasize training residents in culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient populations across various clinical settings. We offer residents unique training experiences in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. With our rapidly growing hospital network and a state-of-the-art outpatient curriculum, our residents are well-prepared for rewarding careers.

The Department of Medicine boasts a diverse faculty affiliated with our subspecialty divisions. We are currently training 90 internal medicine residents for careers in clinical and academic medicine. Our dedication to teaching and patient care, combined with our outstanding Department of Medicine faculty, prepares our residents for any field they choose. Approximately 70 percent of our graduates practice as general internists—hospitalists, and primary care physicians serving our communities. The remaining 30 percent match into the most sought-after fellowships. Our graduates have gone on to become clinicians, subspecialists, and clinical leaders in hospitals throughout the United States.

Curriculum

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to education, with the goal of developing clinically competent Board-Certified Internists. This foundation enables our graduates to pursue diverse career paths, including primary care practice, subspecialty training, hospitalist careers, or academics.

Our innovative 4+2 block scheduling system reduces fatigue and burnout while preparing residents for their future careers. Residents spend 4 weeks on the floors followed by 2 weeks in Outpatient/subspeciality clinic rotations

Continuity Clinic and Outpatient Rotations:

The continuity clinic is a cornerstone of our residency program. Each resident follows a dedicated panel of patients throughout their training, providing longitudinal and comprehensive care. This model fosters a deep understanding of patients’ medical and social backgrounds and builds meaningful doctor-patient relationships. Residents manage chronic diseases, coordinate specialty care, and apply evidence-based preventive strategies in real-world practice.

Outpatient rotations expose residents to diverse ambulatory specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and others. These experiences broaden clinical competence in diagnostic reasoning, chronic disease management, and outpatient procedures. Residents also refine essential skills in patient education, motivational interviewing, and effective use of electronic health records.

Primary Care Track:

The Primary Care Track, launched with the 2025 residency class, is designed for residents seeking advanced preparation for careers in community-based and outpatient medicine. The track emphasizes preventive medicine, women’s health, geriatrics, addiction medicine, dermatology, psychiatry and behavioral health, and rotations in community health clinics.

This pathway supplements standard outpatient training with dedicated didactic modules, structured mentorship, and longitudinal exposure to population health, healthcare disparities, and interprofessional collaboration. Residents in this track engage in quality improvement projects and community outreach, strengthening their ability to deliver equitable, patient-centered care.

Candidates for the Primary Care Track should demonstrate a strong commitment to serving the underserved communities of Brooklyn and to advancing access to high-quality primary care.

Quality Improvement:

In their first year, during clinical rotations, residents are given dedicated time for Quality Improvement (QI) activities. They subsequently meet with advisors and either join an ongoing QI project or develop a new project based on hospital quality and safety data or their own experiences.

Educational Activities:

We provide dedicated lecture time that residents must attend. These sessions are interactive, featuring case presentations and discussions on various topics, with attending physicians and fellows participating. This educational time is crucial for reinforcing medical knowledge and fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Team Structure and Workload Management:

Our program caps the number of admissions per team and per resident, ensuring a manageable workload. Each floor team consists of one senior resident and 1-2 interns, along with medical students, promoting an efficient approach to patient management and ample opportunities for case discussion.

Individual schedules vary but are adjusted to maintain a balance of experience and fair workload distribution over the three years of residency. The call schedule for floor rotations follows a short-call/long-call system, with long calls from 7 am to 7 pm and short calls from 7 am to 4 pm. We have a dedicated admitting team

Resident Wellness:

Resident wellness is a continuous process in our program, featuring a variety of activities such as potlucks, wellness walks, mentor-mentee pairings, buddy groups, sports, and other regularly planned events by the resident wellness group. In addition to these activities, we provide dedicated male and female on-call rooms with attached bathrooms, and a resident lounge equipped with TV and cable services. We also host regular wellness lectures and activities, including sessions from guest speakers where residents learn about their rights and strategies for managing work-life balance.
