The Internal Medicine program emphasizes the biological, clinical, and socio-cultural aspects of adult medicine and recognizes the importance of understanding patients’ lived experiences, particularly within Brooklyn’s diverse inner-city communities. Residents are trained to manage a wide spectrum of acute and chronic medical conditions while addressing health disparities and social determinants of health.
Affiliation with other community hospitals within the One Brooklyn Health System (OBH) provides residents with valuable opportunities to gain experience across multiple subspecialties, broaden their exposure to diverse patient populations, and develop adaptability across varied clinical environments. Overall, Brookdale Hospital Medical Center’s Internal Medicine residency program is designed to prepare future internists for effective, ethical, and independent practice in both academic and community-based settings.

The resident workday typically begins at 7:00 AM on major rotations. Residents participate in scheduled on-call coverage to ensure continuous patient care.
• PGY-1: Rotating call schedule, typically every fourth night
• PGY-2: Night float responsibilities covering inpatient services
• PGY-3: Senior supervisory call with increased leadership responsibility
An on-call attending physician is always available on-site or by direct supervision to provide guidance and ensure patient safety. Daily sign-out rounds led by senior or chief residents ensure effective handoffs and continuity of care.
The PGY-1 year provides a strong foundation in Internal Medicine through core inpatient and outpatient rotations. Residents rotate through general internal medicine, coronary and medical intensive care units, and outpatient continuity care. PGY-1 residents also will rotate through subspecialty services, including cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, and palliative care.
This year emphasizes development of fundamental clinical skills, medical decision-making, documentation, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Residents gain experience managing acutely ill patients and chronic medical conditions under close faculty supervision.
The PGY-2-year builds upon foundational skills with greater responsibility and exposure to advanced internal medicine practice. Residents rotate through subspecialty services such as Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, and Endocrinology.
Residents play a supervisory role for interns and medical students, developing leadership, teaching, and communication skills while managing more complex patient care
The PGY-3 year emphasizes senior-level responsibility, outpatient continuity care, and preparation for independent practice or fellowship training. Residents function as team leaders on inpatient services and refine diagnostic and management skills for complex cases.
Career mentorship, fellowship application guidance, and board preparation are key components of the PGY-3 year.
We provide dedicated lecture time that residents must attend. These sessions are interactive, featuring case presentations and discussions on various topics, with attending physicians and fellows participating. This educational time is crucial for reinforcing medical knowledge and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Didactic sessions are held daily for a noon conference with the schedule maintained through the outlook calendar with subspecialty block exams at the end of each block. Residents are required to attend at least 70% of educational conferences.
Department of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds are held monthly and cover a wide range of current, evidence-based, and clinically relevant topics aimed at enhancing medical knowledge and patient care.
We also have a state-of-the-art simulation lab for residents to practice procedural skills and handling patient care emergencies
Residents receive formal instruction in research methodology, statistics, and quality improvement principles. PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents are encouraged to participate in scholarly activities, including clinical research and quality improvement projects under faculty mentorship.
Residents are supported in presenting their work at departmental conferences, regional meetings, and national professional societies. Participation in longitudinal quality improvement initiatives fosters teamwork, leadership, and system-based practice.
Residents also have the opportunity to present their research or quality improvement work at our annual, system-wide/institutional Research Day.
The program hosts several annual wellness events, including an intern meet-and-greet, a graduation celebration, and a Winter Gala sponsored by GME,. In addition, the program supports a resident-led wellness group that organizes a variety of activities throughout the academic year.
Residents have access to dedicated on-call rooms and a resident lounge designed to promote rest, collegiality, and wellness. The program strongly supports resident well-being through mentorship, peer support, and access to institutional wellness resources.
