Welcome to One Brooklyn Health PM&R Residency Program

One Brooklyn Health is located in Central and East Brooklyn, serving one of the most diverse patient populations in the country. Our mission driven PM&R residency focuses on functional restoration, community impact, and hands on training. Residents gain strong exposure to complex pathology, early responsibility, and daily experience working within multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams. We foster a supportive environment that values resident wellness, mentorship, and professional growth.

Residents train across multiple unique hospitals and experience every major rehabilitation setting, including acute inpatient rehabilitation, subacute rehabilitation, consult services, and robust outpatient clinics.

  • Broad pathology exposure including stroke, polytrauma, spinal cord injury, amputations, and complex medical rehabilitation 
     
  • Strong musculoskeletal and pain exposure through outpatient clinics including spine, joints, sports injuries, and continuity care 
     
  • Dedicated experiences in functional mobility, gait disorders, wheelchair evaluation, and prosthetics and orthotics

Clinical Training Sites 

 

Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center Level II Trauma Center with high acuity inpatient consult exposure

 

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center Subacute and chronic rehabilitation units with robust outpatient clinics covering musculoskeletal medicine, pain, and continuity care 

 

SUNY Downstate Hospital Acute rehabilitation unit with outpatient musculoskeletal and stroke clinics and inpatient consult services 

 

James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center 
Spinal cord injury unit exposure as part of the residency curriculum 

 

Residents rotate through all sites for comprehensive exposure across the full continuum of rehabilitation care. 

Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation Training 

 

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

 

  • Acute stroke recovery including ischemic, hemorrhagic, and complex cases   
  • Amputations, polytrauma, and spinal cord injury  
      
  • Daily collaboration with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nursing, and case management  
      
  • Functional assessment, goal setting, family training, and discharge planning 

 

 

Outpatient Clinics and Procedural Exposure 

 

  • Musculoskeletal clinics including spine, joints, and sports injuries 
     
  • Pain clinic exposure 
     
  • Spasticity management 
     
  • Prosthetics and orthotics exposure 
     
  • Wheelchair clinic 
     
  • Stroke and neuro continuity clinics 
     
  • Gait and functional mobility evaluation 
     
  • EMG and nerve conduction studies with progressive autonomy 
     

 

 

Educational Structure

 

Educational goals are achieved through: 

 

  • Daily diagnosis and management of neurologic, musculoskeletal, and medically complex rehabilitation conditions 
     
  • Direct involvement in interdisciplinary rehabilitation planning with a focus on functional outcomes, disposition planning, and placement options 
     
  • Graduated responsibility with close attending mentorship 
     
  • Opportunities for scholarly work, quality improvement, leadership, and elective experiences 
     

Application and Interview Process:

All residency positions are filled through the National Residency Matching Program and applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service. 

 

Application requirements include: 

  • Completed ERAS application 
     
  • Medical school transcript 
     
  • Personal statement 
     
  • USMLE or COMLEX transcripts 
     
  • MSPE (Dean’s letter) 
     
  • Letters of recommendation 

 

Rotation Schedule Overview 

Residents rotate through multiple affiliated medical centers, gaining experience in acute inpatient rehabilitation, subacute rehabilitation, consult services, and outpatient clinics. Training includes exposure to musculoskeletal medicine, neurorehabilitation, pain management, prosthetics and orthotics, wheelchair evaluation, and electrodiagnostic medicine. 

 

Call Schedules 

Call schedules are determined by individual hospital sites within the overall rotation structure. The residency program complies with Graduate Medical Education duty hour guidelines. 

Time Away from Program Duties 

Residents receive: 

  • 20 vacation days  
  • 4 personal days  
  • 6 sick days including conference days 
     

Conferences and Research Opportunities 

Residents are encouraged to participate in scholarly activity and quality improvement projects with faculty mentorship. Opportunities for presentations and publications are supported throughout residency. 

 

Didactics 

Residents participate in structured didactics and interdisciplinary learning. This is protective time for Residents each week
