One Brooklyn Health hosted a Black Maternal Health event themed: Healing Legacies & Strengthening Black Maternal Health through Collective Action and Advocacy!
The event was curated out of a commitment to address the disparities in Black maternal health in the community and to provide free, accessible resources for black mothers and babies.
The event featured One Brooklyn Health experts like doulas, lactation counselors, postpartum specialists, physicians, and wellness advocates and featured a special guest, Kimberly Seals Allers, the founder of the maternal health tech app Irth, a Black-owned platform revolutionizing how black mothers share and access information about their maternal care.
Panelists addressed topics such as centering the pregnancy experience and increasing access to psychosocial support for mothers. Mothers and families had an opportunity to share their unique maternity experience with the attendees, including the post-traumas that they suffered during delivery and birth.
In addition, attendees were invited to express their experiences through art, painting, and drawing portraits that represented Black maternal health, and gave voice to the community in a healing, visual way.
