Children need specialized care, and we value your trust in our pediatricians and medical experts to care for your family’s needs. OBH offers a wide array of medical care for children, including primary care, specialized care, behavioral care, surgery and emergency care needs.

We have practices focusing on specialized care for children facing specific illnesses or diseases – all staffed with certified, trained, caring physicians and supporting staff to help your family manage your child’s medical needs. OBH’s goal is to ensure your family and child(ren) feel informed, comfortable and cared for in the best way possible.

Brookdale Medical Center
The department of pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, located in the CHC building of the hospital, has five ambulatory satellite clinics in Brownsville, delivering preventive care and caring for well and sick children with 20,000 annual patient visits. We have 15 pediatric sub-specialty services, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and a nationally recognized comprehensive sickle cell program. Our pediatric emergency department treats over 26,000 children annually.

Interfaith Medical Center
The department of pediatrics at Interfaith Medical Center has a comprehensive ambulatory center at Bishop-Walker Center and is a medical home for pediatric patients. It also has comprehensive adolescent, sickle cell and neurology services. In addition, the emergency room at Interfaith Medical Center can handle pediatric emergencies and communicate effectively with Brookdale's inpatient unit for patients needing inpatient care.

Kingsbrook Hospital
Kingsbrook Hospital has a 32-bed skilled nursing pediatric facility, which provides comprehensive and integrative health care to children ages three months to 18 years. This unit is part of Rutland Nursing home and provides sub-acute/short-term rehabilitation, long-term placement and respite care.

Established in a long-standing tradition of training future generations of doctors, our pediatric residency program at Brookdale Hospital has 36 outstanding residents from all over the world.

Additionally, we take pride in teaching and training medical students from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, SABA University, and NYIT, who rotate with us every month.

The Reach Out and Read Program is an early literacy program that focuses on children from 6 months through 5 years old, the most critical years for brain development.  To learn more about the program, visit https://reachoutandread.org/

Healthy Steps, a program of ZERO TO THREE, is an evidence-based, interdisciplinary pediatric primary care program that promotes the health, well-being and school readiness of toddlers, with an emphasis on families living in low-income communities.

AMBULATORY SERVICES

Pediatric Ambulatory care has five family care centers located in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Each center is set up like a private office and has its own special ambiance. Experienced faculty care for the patients and precept residents to provide a training environment which focuses on continuity of care and longitudinal follow up of patients. Emphasis is placed on well child care, growth and development, nutrition, screening, anticipatory guidance, immunizations, safety and preventive care, as well as management acute and chronic illness. Population Health and Quality Metrics  are an integral part of  the training.  

All our primary care sites  are recognized as Patient Centered Medical Homes and strive to deliver care that emphasizes care coordination and communication to transform primary care into “what patients want it to be.” Medical homes can lead to high quality care, lower hospitalization, costs, and improves patient and provider care experience.

ADOLESCENT MEDICINE

The Division of Adolescent Medicine at Brookdale is the leading comprehensive health care program for teenagers in Brooklyn.  It consists of in-patient, out-patient, school and community “outreach” activities. The full-service program includes specialists in adolescent care, a gynecology service strictly for teenagers, an adolescent inpatient unit, and physicians who treat eating disorders.  There is a Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison team, composed of a child adolescent psychiatrist and social worker. Our team includes nurses, social worker and medical assistants who are specifically trained to work with teenagers.


Services provided include full medical, gynecological, nutritional, and psychological counseling, evaluation and treatment. 

  • Menstrual problems (absent, irregular, heavy or infrequent menstrual bleeding, severe pain)
  • Eating and feeding disorders, including: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
  • Contraception & Contraceptive counseling
  • Gender identity and sexual development issues
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment
  • Tobacco, drug and alcohol abuse/misuse
  • Reproductive health visits, Pregnancy diagnosis counseling and referral
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Chronic pelvic pain & Endometriosis

PEDIATRIC ALLERGY & IMMUNOLOGY

At the Allergy & Immunology clinic in Brookdale we provide care for infants, children, and teens with allergies or other disorders of the immune system, while implementing the latest in diagnostic and treatment options.

Allergy and Immunology encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of problems with the immune system. It is our goal to provide optimal care for our children and to promote understanding of allergic disorders.

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology offers pediatric inpatient and outpatient services. We diagnose and provide treatment for a wide range of pediatric cardiac conditions such as:

PEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE

The Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PICU) is located in the 8 CHC building, next to the pediatric inpatient unit. We have 5 beds with PICU trained nurses caring for the patients. We have a dedicated social worker, and a child life specialist. Our residents rotate for a month in the PICU in the third year of their training. 

We treat a variety of critically sick patients from birth up to 21 years – status asthmaticus, severe bronchiolitis, acute chest syndrome, diabetic ketoacidosis, to name a few. We do high flow nasal oxygen, BiPAP and central lines. The pediatric floor serves as a step-down unit for our improving patients. 

Our residents are trained well to manage critically sick children when they complete their residency.

DEVELOPMENTAL & BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICS

The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Division promotes the developmental and behavioral health of infants, children, adolescents and their families by evidence-based clinical practice, and advocacy for children. Our Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Program evaluates, counsels, and provides treatment for children, adolescents, and their families with a wide range of developmental and behavioral difficulties, including:

  • Learning disorders including dyslexia, writing difficulties, math disorders, and other school-related learning problems.
  • Attention and behavioral disorders including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and associated conditions including oppositional-defiant behavior, conduct problems, depression, and anxiety disorders.
  • Tics, and Tourette syndrome.
  • Regulatory disorders including sleep disorders, feeding problems, discipline difficulties, complicated toilet-training issues, enuresis (bedwetting), and encopresis (soiling).
  • Developmental disabilities including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, and visual and hearing impairments.
  • Delayed development in speech, language, motor skills, and thinking ability.
  • Behavioral and developmental problems complicating the full range of pediatric chronic illnesses and disabling conditions. (For example: genetic disorders, epilepsy, prematurity, diabetes, asthma and cancer).

HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is staffed by Board-Certified Pediatric Hematologists. The department diagnoses and treats children and teenagers with blood disorders such as anemias, bleeding disorders, sickle cell disease and cancer. Children and teens with these conditions receive coordinated care from our team of doctors, nurses, social workers and child life specialists. The team also coordinates care with the child’s primary care physician and other specialists. Our dedicated staff provide information, education and counseling. We help parents of affected children to cope with chronic or severe disease, obtaining medical insurance coverage, financial support and transportation assistance. Physicians are available 24 hours a day to answer questions and/or give advice.

PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIST SERVICES

The pediatric hospitalist division has two full time hospitalists and three part time hospitalists. The pediatric inpatient unit in located in the 8th floor of the CHC building. We provide care for hospitalized children from birth to 21 years. We manage simple to complicated pediatric medical conditions and co-manage pediatric surgery, adolescent gynecology, orthopedic and ENT conditions. We have a multidisciplinary approach to the patient’s illness, addressing the social, financial, and emotional problems associated with hospitalizations. Other disciplines like the pharmacists, physiotherapists, speech – language pathologists and other pediatric medical sub-specialists care, are also available for patients as needed.

PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES

The Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) is located in the CHC and outpatient clinic is in the Aaron Building located in the Brookdale Hospital campus. The ID does assessment, consultation, treatment and monitoring of recurrent and/or serious infections such as, but not limited to, meningitis, bone and joint infections, tuberculosis and HIV-AIDS.  The physician is also a part of the STAR program, a New York State AIDS designated program. The pediatric residents may rotate in the division as an option. The division was very active in collaborating with the adult ID division in diagnosis and management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEONATAL / PERINATAL MEDICINE

The Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine consists of a baby-friendly Mother-Baby Unit and a newborn intensive care unit (NICU) for premature and medically complex newborns. There are 2000 deliveries annually at Brookdale. Brookdale has a modern, fully equipped Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 30 bassinets staffed by perinatal specialists.  It is a designated tertiary referral center for New York City. In-house coverage by a board-certified neonatologist is provided 24/7 for all high-risk deliveries and care in the NICU.

NEPHROLOGY

The Department of Nephrology provides comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic and treatment services to children from infancy to young adulthood. They provide Nephrology consults to the pediatric inpatient unit and have a busy outpatient clinic. The residents optionally rotate in this division for a month in their second or third year. The common conditions treated are:

NEUROLOGY

The Division of Pediatric Neurology at Brookdale offers comprehensive evaluation, consultation and management for diseases of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems and the musculoskeletal system.

Our team is ready to take care of infants, children and teens with a variety of neurologic problems, including those affecting learning, behavior, communication or movement. We’re committed to providing highly accessible, professional and personalized care for patients and their families.

PEDIATRIC LONG-TERM CARE UNIT/ RUTLAND NURSING HOME

Rutland Nursing Home has a dedicated 32-bed pediatric long-term care unit for children with severe developmental and metabolic disorders. The unit is staffed with nurses and pediatricians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Medical care in Rutland Nursing Home is coordinated by physicians experienced and dedicated to pediatrics. Encouraging the residents to maximize their ability to lead active and fulfilling lives, licensed nurses provide optimal nursing care and therapists deliver state-of-the art physical, occupational, recreational, and speech therapies. To ensure comprehensive care, dietitians and social workers augment the treatment team.
